The Trento Film Festival is the world’s oldest mountain cinema festival. Founded in 1952, it takes place every spring \u2014 usually late April or early May \u2014 devoting its screens to Alpine cinema, mountains and the cultures of the world.<\/p>\n
It is not a specialist event for climbers. It is a festival open to general audiences, with screenings in cinemas, squares and historic buildings throughout the city, a festive atmosphere and a programme ranging from documentaries and expedition films to experimental productions and narrative works set in the mountains.<\/p>\n
The competitive section is accompanied by thematic retrospectives, meetings with mountaineers and filmmakers, photography exhibitions and a lively series of fringe events that turn Trento’s historic centre into a gathering place for mountain enthusiasts from around the world.<\/p>\n
Each year’s festival poster is the work of an internationally acclaimed illustrator commissioned by the artistic committee. Over the decades these posters have become a small art collection, with names such as Emanuele Luzzati and Lorenzo Mattotti.<\/p>\n
Many screenings take place at Cinema Multisala Vittoria and Teatro Sociale, both a short walk from Hotel Accademia. Open-air screenings in Piazza del Duomo, when weather permits, are among the festival’s most memorable moments: mountain cinema under the stars in one of Italy’s most beautiful squares.<\/p>\n
