Castello del Buonconsiglio: eight centuries of history in Trento

Buonconsiglio Castle Trento

Your guide to Buonconsiglio Castle Trento from Trento: everything you need to know to plan your visit from Hotel Accademia in the historic centre.

Castello del Buonconsiglio is Trento’s most important monument. For eight centuries it dominated the city, residence of the prince-bishops who governed these lands at the crossroads of the Germanic and Italian worlds. Today it is one of the largest museum complexes in Trentino, deserving at least two hours — more for lovers of medieval history.

The complex comprises two main sections. The Castelvecchio is the oldest part: a tower and a Romanesque courtyard dating to the 13th century. The Magno Palazzo is the Renaissance palace of the prince-bishops, built in the 16th century with frescoes by Romanino and Dosso Dossi that still astonish with their vivid colours and narrative complexity. The cycle of the months in the loggia is one of the most significant works of Northern Italian Renaissance painting.

Inside the collections you will find works of art, maiolica collections, ancient weapons, furniture and historical documents tracing the history of Trentino from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

Strolling through the castle’s inner courtyards is a pleasure in itself: the loggias, hanging gardens and views over the city and mountains create an atmosphere unmatched in Trento. In summer the castle hosts cultural events, concerts and temporary exhibitions.

The Torre dell’Aquila

Outside the official museum route, a stop at the Torre dell’Aquila is essential — it houses the famous Cycle of the Months, late 15th-century Gothic frescoes considered among the most important in Europe. Access is limited in numbers: booking is strongly recommended.

Getting there

The castle is about fifteen minutes on foot from Piazza del Duomo, up a short but steep incline. There is no parking on site; street parking is available in nearby streets. Opening days: Tuesday to Sunday, with seasonal variations — check the official website before visiting.
