Trento’s old town museums: culture within walking distance

Museums old town Trento

Your guide to museums old town Trento from Trento: everything you need to know to plan your visit from Hotel Accademia in the historic centre.

Trento’s historic centre is home to several small and medium-sized museums well worth exploring, especially on a rainy day or as an alternative to the castle and MUSE.

Museo Diocesano Tridentino

Housed in Palazzo Pretorio on Piazza del Duomo, it holds the diocese’s sacred art collections: paintings, tapestries, illuminated manuscripts and liturgical objects gathered over the centuries. The Tridentine Council room, with the original wooden choir from the cathedral, is a space of rare atmosphere.

Museo Civico di Trento

Located in Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, it preserves collections of local history, archaeology and modern art. The 19th and 20th-century Trentino art sections are little known outside the region but of real quality. Admission is free or discounted for some categories.

Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea

On Piazzetta Leoni, it hosts temporary contemporary art exhibitions with a focus on environmental themes and Alpine artistic production. The exhibition programme is updated each season.

Museo dell’Aeronautica Gianni Caproni

Just outside the historic centre on Via Luigi Sella, this is a must for aviation enthusiasts: one of Italy’s most important collections of historic aircraft, spanning from the earliest days of flight to the Second World War.

Our recommendation

If time is short, the Diocesan Museum should come first: it is on Piazza del Duomo, takes about an hour and provides invaluable context for understanding the city’s history. Most of Trento’s historic-centre museums close on Mondays. Check updated opening times on their websites before visiting, especially during public holidays.
