Feste Vigiliane Trento Renaissance
Your guide to Feste Vigiliane Trento Renaissance from Trento: everything you need to know to plan your visit from Hotel Accademia in the historic centre.
The Feste Vigiliane are Trento’s defining summer event. Taking place in late June — usually the last week of the month — they transform the historic centre into an open-air stage for several days, with historical re-enactments, processions, music and performances.
The celebration takes its name from San Vigilio, patron saint of Trento, whose feast day falls on 26 June. The theme is 16th-century Renaissance Trento, and everything — from costumes to choreography to music — is designed to evoke that era with maximum historical rigour.
The battle of the Ciusi and the Gobj
The heart of the festival is the re-enactment of the historic rivalry between the residents of the San Martino quarter (the Ciusi) and those of the Santa Maria Maggiore quarter (the Gobj). This is no mere theatrical battle: the two factions compete in games, races and skill challenges throughout the week. Participants train for months and allegiance to one faction is something the local community takes very seriously.
Markets, processions and medieval atmosphere
During the festival, the historic centre fills with medieval markets, costumed craftspeople, traditional food stalls and wandering musicians. Evenings see processions in Renaissance dress, with hundreds of participants moving through torchlit squares.
The most spectacular moment is the opening parade, culminating in Piazza del Duomo with a light and music show. Seeing the square lit up at night, with costumed figures against the backdrop of frescoed palaces, is an experience hard to forget.
