Trento’s Christmas Markets: lights, scents and crafts in the old town

Christmas markets Trento

Your guide to Christmas markets Trento from Trento: everything you need to know to plan your visit from Hotel Accademia in the historic centre.

Trento’s Christmas Markets are among the most beautiful and authentic in Italy. Unlike many similar events that have become showcases for industrial products, Trento’s markets maintain a craft character and above-average quality that sets them apart.

They run every year from late November to 26 December, with the main sites at Piazza Fiera and Piazza Cesare Battisti. The wooden stalls — some unchanged for decades — sell Christmas decorations in wood and blown glass, nativity scenes, candles, local crafts, mulled wine and traditional Trentino sweets such as zelten and spelt-flour panettone.

A Central European atmosphere

Trento is a city on a cultural border, and its Christmas markets reflect this dual Italian and Austro-Tyrolean soul. German signs alongside Italian ones, the decorations on 19th-century bourgeois houses, the spices scenting the air — these are elements rarely found elsewhere in northern Italy.

The venues

Piazza Fiera is the main site, with the most stalls and the most carefully curated light installations. Piazza Cesare Battisti houses the monumental nativity scene and stalls dedicated to local food. Via Manci, the street connecting the two squares, is often animated by street performers and musicians.

What to buy

Recommended: hand-carved wooden nativity figures from Val Gardena workshops, blown glass decorations, grappa and Trentino liqueurs, artisan Christmas pastries.

Practical information

The markets are open daily, usually 10:00 to 19:30, with extended hours at weekends. Entry is free. Hotel Accademia is steps from both main sites. Trento in December is a calm city for visitors: hotel prices are often lower than in summer and the centre is lively but not overcrowded.
