Autumn is perhaps the most beautiful season to visit Trento. From September to November the light changes, the mountain colours ignite, and the city returns to a quieter, more everyday dimension, free of the summer’s tourist crowds.
The grape harvest
September is harvest month. The hills around Trento — Mezzocorona, Lavis, Aldeno — come alive with tractors loaded with grapes. Open wineries, grape festivals in the outlying villages and the chance to buy must directly from producers are experiences hard to find in a city setting. Trentodoc — Trentino’s traditional-method sparkling wine — and Teroldego Rotaliano are the most significant local wines.
Chestnuts
October brings chestnuts. The chestnut groves above Trento — at Sopramonte, Vigolo Baselga and along the Bondone — are harvested in the early morning, and chestnut markets appear in the squares at weekends. Roasted chestnuts are the scent of the Trentino autumn.
Mountain walks
Autumn mountain walks offer exceptional visual quality. The Bondone larches turn yellow and orange in October; the Brenta Dolomites, visible from many points on the Pinè plateau, glow pink at sunset. October and early November are ideal: trails are dry, there are no summer crowds and the cold has not yet closed the mountain huts.
Autumn gastronomy
Restaurants offer canederli with porcini mushrooms, ancient-grain polenta, game and mountain cheeses. The Saturday markets in Via Belenzani fill with seasonal produce.
Cultural life
From September, the cultural season resumes. Teatro Sociale offers drama, opera and concerts from September to May. Museums refresh their autumn programme.
