The aperitivo in Trento is a serious ritual. The city has a lively evening scene, especially on weekday evenings between September and June, when university students and city workers fill bars and venues from six o’clock onward.
The Trento format
The prevailing model is the aperitivo with snacks: order a drink — Aperol spritz, prosecco, a glass of Trentodoc — and a small selection of nibbles arrives automatically: olives, nuts, crisps, sometimes something more elaborate. It is not the lavish buffet of some northern Italian cities, but the better venues take care over their selection.
Bar Tartarughino
A historic venue on Via Oss Mazzurana, one of the most popular spots for the after-work aperitivo. Small, lively, with a great Aperol and well-made cicchetti. Expect to stand if you arrive after 18:30.
La Cantina di Via Suffragio
A wine bar that becomes an evening bar. The selection of local wines — Trentodoc, Nosiola, Teroldego — is thoughtful, the boards of local cheeses and cured meats are generous. The right place for a slow, seated aperitivo with a shared bottle.
Piazza del Duomo outdoors
Several bars with outdoor seating face the square, and in summer the evenings outside with the illuminated cathedral as a backdrop are an experience worth paying slightly higher prices for.
Tip
Trentodoc — the traditional-method sparkling wine produced in Trentino from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes — is the ideal local wine for an aperitivo. It is hard to find outside Trentino at these prices and with this quality: the perfect opportunity to try it at source.
