Walking through Trento’s historic centre: a self-guided itinerary

Walking historic centre Trento

Your guide to walking historic centre Trento from Trento: everything you need to know to plan your visit from Hotel Accademia in the historic centre.

Trento’s historic centre is compact and entirely walkable. No transport is needed, no complicated maps: a couple of hours of unhurried walking is enough to take in the essentials.

Piazza del Duomo

The natural starting point and the true heart of the city. At the centre stands the Neptune fountain in Candoglia marble; all around, the frescoed palaces make this one of the most photogenic squares in north-east Italy. The Cathedral of San Vigilio, with its Romanesque façade, deserves a stop inside: the early Christian remains of the original basilica are underneath.

Via Belenzani

From Piazza del Duomo, Via Belenzani climbs northward. It is one of the city’s most beautiful streets, lined with Renaissance palaces bearing frescoed façades. Palazzo Salvadori, Palazzo Geremia and Palazzo Quetta-Alberti display hunting scenes, allegorical figures and noble portraits, surprisingly well preserved.

Towards the castle

Continuing, you reach Piazza del Municipio and then, turning right, climb towards Castello del Buonconsiglio. The ascent is brief. Alternatively, follow Via Manci alongside the medieval walls, observing how the medieval city was layered over the Roman one.

Via San Marco and the local shops

On the way back, Via San Marco and its side streets host independent shops, bookshops and small craft workshops — the least touristy and perhaps most authentic part of the old centre.

Distances and tips

From the cathedral to the castle is under fifteen minutes at a normal pace. A complete circuit without stops takes about an hour; with photos and coffee breaks, two hours is more realistic. Much of the centre is cobbled: comfortable shoes are recommended, especially in summer heat.
